We had 100.000 less birds than a few years ago. Where did they go? Or is something going on with the Lesser Sandplover population? (Feb 2023).

March is usually the best time to find Pied Wagtai

March is usually the best time to find Pied Wagtails (Motacilla alba yarrellii) in the Netherlands. Pied Wagtails look a lot like the european mainland White Wagtails, but they have more black instead of grey. This (sub)species of White Wagtail breed on the British Islands. I found this young male today in the harbour of Delfzijl. (Mar 2023).

Hoopoe-lark is one of the most beautiful lark species in the (greater) Western Paleartic region. Also the very slow, whistling song is very enjoyable. During the Oman survey we observed several of these birds (Jan 2023).

I was asked by @wetlands_international to join a research survey to Bar Al Hikman in Oman to count waterbirds last week. Bar Al Hikman is one of the most important areas for wintering and migrating waders from the Asian-East African Flyway. We counted 290.000 birds. Unfortunately a bit less than in previous years. This Terek Sandpiper was one of them (Jan 2023).
