Net terug van een geweldige expeditie cruise rond Spitsbergen met @BirdingBreaks.nl en @oceanwideexp Deze reis stond al jaren op ons verlanglijstje en wat een geweldige ervaring was dit! Adembenemende landschappen, met vele gletsjers die in zee uitkwamen, het zien van het pakijs op ca. 1000 km van de geografische noordpool, IJsbeer zien, varen in een zodiac langs een gletsjer met 25 Ivoormeeuwen op je heen, de 6 walvis en dolfijnensoorten die we onderweg tegenkwamen, de geweldige zeevogels en de machtige stilte om je heen. Geen mensen, alleen ruigte en natuur.

Just got back from an amazing expedition cruise around Svalbard with BirdingBreaks.nl & Oceanwide Expeditions. This trip had been on our wish list for years, and what a fantastic experience it was! Breathtaking landscapes, with many glaciers reaching the sea, seeing the pack ice around 1000 km from the geographic North Pole, spotting a polar bear, sailing in a zodiac along a glacier surrounded by 25 ivory gulls, the 6 species of whales and dolphins we encountered along the way, the amazing seabird species, and the powerful silence all around you. No people, just wilderness and nature.

Fairy Pitta breeds on Taiwan, but they only arrive halfway April, mostly around 20 April. Our trip to Taiwan ended on 19 April, so that means that we only had a real change seeing this bird on our last day. So we asked a local guide to search the day before, and based on his finding decide to go or to fill in our last day different. We were lucky that he found a bird the day before so we could add this to our list on our last day! (Apr 2026).

Last April we visited Taiwan for a birds and natur

Last April we visited Taiwan for a birds and nature trip. Taiwan house around 30 endemic bird species, birds that only occur in Taiwan and no where else in the world. In the first 4 days we already observed 29 of them. The last one was Styan's Bulbul, a certainty on the other side of the island (that we indeed saw a few days later).

One of the endemics is this Taiwan Yellow Tit, the bird on this photo. On forehand you see them in your fieldguide, but when we found this bird in the wild it was even more beautiful than expected. I really enjoyed this species. They were a bit bigger than I expected (Mar 2026).

Vorig weekend thuis gekomen van een week Lesbos, w

Vorig weekend thuis gekomen van een week Lesbos, waar ik de samenwerkingsreis van @BirdingBreaks.nl en @Birdingholland.nl mocht begeleiden. Een heerlijke week vogels kijken met leuke soorten en lekkere temperaturen.

Net als vorig jaar heb ik de deelnemers van de reis gevraagd om max 10 foto's of video's uit te zoeken en naar me op te sturen, zodat ik daar een aftermovie van kon maken, samen met de foto's die Martijn Bot en ikzelf hadden gemaakt. Wat een leuk overzicht geeft van wat we zoal hebben gezien.

Overigens is deze reis ook weer te boeken voor volgend jaar.

Last year around this date I just came back from Costa Rica. We travelled around the country for 2 weeks specially for birds and observed around 470 species. This Purple-throated Mountaingem was one of the many hummingbirds that we saw (Mar 2025).

Snow Buntings are winter visitors to the Netherlands. They breed in Arctic regions and wander to the south down the european coastlines. They somehow always manage to find some food in the scarce vegetation (Feb 2026).

It's already two and a half year ago that I encoun

It's already two and a half year ago that I encountered this young Wolf. He was undisturbly hunting for mice and had no eye for the observators standing close bye on some occasions. One of the best wildlife encounters that I had in the Netherlands (Nov 2023).

This footage of a Sandhill Crane was taken in November 2024, just across the German border on only a 30 minutes drive from where I live . Sandhill Cranes breed in North America and eastern Siberia and are very rare visitors to Europe. We’re still hoping for a twitchable individual in the Netherlands, as most Dutch birders missed the country’s only twitchable record back in 1991 (Germany, Nov 2024)

Most birds of the Euphonia family are yellow with a dark blue/black variation somewhere. The Olive-backed Euphonia is an exception. An the female (as the one on this photo) in particular, with much more green tones in her back (Costa Rica, Mar 2025).
