Last year around this date I just came back from Costa Rica. We travelled around the country for 2 weeks specially for birds and observed around 470 species. This Purple-throated Mountaingem was one of the many hummingbirds that we saw (Mar 2025).

It's already two and a half year ago that I encoun

It's already two and a half year ago that I encountered this young Wolf. He was undisturbly hunting for mice and had no eye for the observators standing close bye on some occasions. One of the best wildlife encounters that I had in the Netherlands (Nov 2023).

This footage of a Sandhill Crane was taken in November 2024, just across the German border on only a 30 minutes drive from where I live . Sandhill Cranes breed in North America and eastern Siberia and are very rare visitors to Europe. We’re still hoping for a twitchable individual in the Netherlands, as most Dutch birders missed the country’s only twitchable record back in 1991 (Germany, Nov 2024)

Most birds of the Euphonia family are yellow with a dark blue/black variation somewhere. The Olive-backed Euphonia is an exception. An the female (as the one on this photo) in particular, with much more green tones in her back (Costa Rica, Mar 2025).

Probably the most photographed bird in the Netherl

Probably the most photographed bird in the Netherlands. At least in 2025. This long staying drake Spectacled Eider, comming all the way from the high Arctic and only the the 6th for Europe. The other reports were on Svalbard and north Noreway and from long time ago. This bird had visitors from all over the world, from most european countries to people from India and Canada.

Yesterday I visited Texel for the Black-faced Bunting, but I couldn't resist a 4th visit to this duck. If you told me last year that I would see those 2 species on 1 day I would probably say that you are nuts and that's impossible (Dec 2025)

This American Golden Plover stayed in the Eemshave

This American Golden Plover stayed in the Eemshaven the last days of August and first days of September. It was very approachable as waders that breed in high Arctic areas sometimes can be because they don't see humans as danger since they don't see them alot. I photographed this bird on the 2nd day of it's stay where we relocate it in the evening after it disappeared for quite a while. The sun was setting giving a beautiful orange backlight on the bird (Aug 2025).
